Centella Asiatica

Centella Asiatica

Centella Asiatica, better known as "tiger grass" (and on the ingredient lists you can also find it as asiatic acid, hydrocotyl or gotu kola), is a plant that primarily grows in Asia, where it has been used in medicine and cooking for centuries. The interesting name "tiger grass" comes from the fact that Bengal tigers used to roll in the leaves of this plant to heal their wounds.

Due to its many benefits for the skin, it quickly entered the skincare world, and it was first used in South Korea, where it was the backbone of the formulations of moisturizing creams, better known as "cica cream".

Benefits for the skin

The main active component of the plant itself is madecasoside, which is an exceptional antioxidant and is a rich source of amino acids. The primary action is soothing and restorative -whether it is a broken skin barrier or just skin hypersensitivity, Centella extract Asiatic will regenerate damaged skin, reduce redness and irritation, and is especially useful for minor superficial wounds, scratches and burns. At the same time, it moisturizes the skin, stimulates the production of ceramide (ceramide NS) and thus visibly supports a healthy skin barrier. This is precisely why we find it in more and more Korean SPFs because it perfectly cancels out the effects of sun exposure such as redness and dehydration.

Centella Asiatica also works synergistically with brightening ingredients and those with anti-inflammatory acne so it can be an excellent addition to the routine if you are troubled by such problems. It will help reduce the accompanying redness and inflammation that comes with acne and help the skin heal faster after acne while reducing the chances of hyperpigmentation left behind.

Numerous products on our webshop contain this very ingredient, from washes to toners and serums to sun protection products. It has become a trademark and recognizable sign of Korean cosmetics, and brands like SKIN1004 have developed their entire philosophy precisely on this ingredient. The Centella Asiatica found in their products originates from Madagascar, an island nation located off the coast of the southeast coast of Africa. The concentration of asiaticoside, the active ingredient of the plant, in Centella from Madagascar is seven times greater compared to other areas where this plant grows.
